Apr 22 – Pedal power is the way to work for AWA
These days it seems that everyone is talking about the need to go green, but at AWA we thought we’d actually do something about it.
That’s why we’ve signed up to the government’s Bike to Work scheme as a way of helping every member of our team actively do their bit by leaving the car at home and commuting by bicycle.
Thanks to the Bike to Work scheme each employee can now lease a brand new bike, plus safety equipment, at a greatly reduced price.
Anyone taking part in the scheme pays for their bike in monthly instalments and as these are deducted from their gross pay it means they pay less tax and National Insurance. We’re then able to claim back the VAT on each bike leased, and also pass this saving onto our staff.
One condition of the scheme is that the bike has to be ridden to work at least half the working week and at the end of the one year lease period participants are given the option to buy the bike outright for a nominal fee.
Alasdair Wightman, Managing Director of AWA, explains the attraction of the scheme: “As a company we’re always looking at ways to reduce the negative impact that our activities have on the environment, and travel is a big part of this. For example, one of the main reasons we chose our current office space was due to its excellent central location, near to all major public transport networks.
Currently, half of our employees walk, take public transport or cycle to work, and we’re hoping that more will decide to ditch their cars in favour of two wheels as a result of the Bike to Work scheme. A lot of the team are very active so it’s also a nice benefit to offer them and a great initiative to get behind.”
